On 11 January 1597, during the first Dutch East Company’s trade
expedition led by Cornelis de Houtman, the expedition ship Amsterdam was
badly damaged off the Bawean coast. The ship Amsterdam (second left)
crashed near Bawean. It was abandoned and burnt at the Island of Bawean.
Three of the four
skippers from the expedition died. After an absence of two and a half
years the remaining three vessels limped back to Holland on August 11
and 14, 1597, with eighty-nine men out of a total of 249.
